The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new safety label for the prescription drug Nexium, which is used to treat a number of conditions. The drug is called Nexium 24HR. It is a brand name for a drug called NEXIUM, which is used for heartburn, acid reflux, and other similar conditions.
“The FDA has approved this drug for treating various heartburn conditions, such as heartburn that occurs shortly after eating,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“This drug can be used to treat other heartburn and acid reflux conditions such as GERD, and to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).”
The new label is one of several safety statements for the drug.
“This drug is approved for the treatment of heartburn and acid reflux, but not the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease,” the FDA said in a statement. “It is used for various conditions including heartburn and acid reflux and GERD. It can also be used to treat acid reflux and GERD.”
The FDA said that the new label is an update on Nexium. It does not include a link to an actual heartburn diagnosis.
The company also said it will release the label to doctors on Monday.
“This is a big move for the FDA,” said Dr. Tom Brokaw, president of the FDA’s Division of Gastroenterology.
“We’re very pleased to have this as the first drug for heartburn and acid reflux in the US. It’s not a magic pill, but it’s important that the FDA has the tools to determine if this drug is appropriate for that condition.”
Dr. Steven E. Moreland, a gastroenterologist at New York-Presbyterian, said that the new label is “not an easy fix,” but that it will help ensure the FDA will give more patients the benefit of more warnings.
“With the label change, we’re hoping that a better understanding of heartburn is available,” said Ehrlich, a gastroenterologist at the University of Toronto.
The new label will contain the drug’s name, dosage and frequency. Doctors will be able to give patients a prescription if they have a known history of heartburn and acid reflux.
Moreland said that the new label will have a boxed warning about serious health risks. The warning is “unclear,” he said, so the label will be revised to include that information.
He added that the label will be available in the United States by the end of the year.
“It’s important that we’re making progress with this new label,” he said.

Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
